THE SCALPEL-LESS FACE LIFT

We have all noticed people in their 60s, 70s and 80s who look much younger than their years because of their beautiful, healthy smiles.

We have also seen young people who appear to be much older-due to a deteriorated, irregular or drabsmile.

What is it about a smile that makes it look tired and worn out? As we age, teeth get stained; they chip and crack. Teeth stained from age tend to stain from the inside out, which makes them not respond well to whitening treatments. For the age- stained smile, porcelain veneers can give you that "Hollywood white" look.

Sometimes, non-aesthetic dental work can also age a smile. We have all seen opaque unnatural caps, or those that appear dark gray at the gumline. We can replace these types of crowns with new all-ceramic crowns that look just as beautiful as our porcelain veneers.

However, it is more than just the look of the teeth. Did you know that your teeth and jaws support the lower 1/3 of your face? As your teeth wear and break down, the facial support may also diminish. Lines and folds, particularly around the upper lip, may be accentuated, in part, by a worn out smile.

There are three main ways that we can counter this:

1. The simplest way is to broaden the upper smile. We do this by making the veneers on the upper side teeth wider. It is the wider smile that in many cases can support the face better.

2. I belive that your smile can make you look 10 years older, or 10 years younger than your actual age—the choice is yours.
